After Dublin upset Mayo in the 2016 All Ireland Final, we decided to forego our night in Westport and spend one last night celebrating in Dublin… then it was off to Galway. Galway was the city I enjoyed most during our previously mentioned college spring break Euro tour, so I was thrilled to be visiting again. So in our adorable little white BMW (still thankful to Hertz in Dublin for recommending we switch our rental from the SUV we had reserved to a more compact option – I’ll explain more later), we hopped on the M4 (on the wrong side of the road) and headed for Galway Town.
On our way, we made a tiny pitstop at the Collins Bar in Dooradoyle, Limerick for lunch. I still regret not stealing a menu with my new last name on it, but I suppose hindsight really is 20/20. At least I remembered to snap a few photos (while being rushed to the car because Ryan insisted people were looking at us funny).
Once we arrived in Galway, we checked into the absolutely stunning gHotel. I loved everything about this place. The lounges were chic, the dining room was brightly cozy and colorful at the same time, and the our room was beautiful. After checking in, we walked the streets, enjoying the buskers, and had a drink at the Bay before dinner and more trad music in An Pucan.
The next day, we took an adventure to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren with a stop for lunch in Doolin. I’ve been to the Cliffs just about every time I’ve been in Ireland because it’s such a sight and I’ve always wanted my travel buddies to see it for themselves, but I didn’t mind going back again because it truly never gets old. I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like it. Of course we had a bit of rain, but it didn’t stop us from enjoying the view and getting a few good photos in (although I don’t think it’s possible to get a bad one at the Cliffs).
Two days was hardly enough time in Galway, but for this trip, it was all we had. I know we’ll be back though. In the meantime, I’ll be playing Ed Sheeran’s “Galway Girl” on loop.
Until next time, Gaillimhe…
